The classes are 30-60 minutes on Wednesday at 6pm and Friday at 6.30am and cost $8 for members and $10 for non-members.
Centre Coordinator Nicolle Scott ran similar classes at Macksville pool before taking up the position of manager in Bellingen at the start of this season.
It’s a family affair, with her partner Mark Lindsay also working at the pool in a customer service and lifeguard role, and their nine-month-old baby Willow coming along for swimming lessons.
Nicolle says swim squad activities are tailored to the needs of participants, with a focus on addressing problems that may be causing injuries or making them less efficient in the water.

“Breaststroke kick is a big one. They tend to turn their knees out instead of in. If they correct that, their knees and ankles don’t hurt as much.”
With freestyle, she says ‘trying too hard’ and relying too much on the upper body is the main problem, and it can result in shoulder injuries.
“Often they’re not using their legs enough. They’re using their upper body strength instead of their lower body strength.”
Note: there’s a change to the timing of the classes for this week only – the evening class will be tomorrow (Tuesday November 22) at 6pm instead of Wednesday.
