Bellingen Shire Council, in partnership with Midwaste, are hosting a number of Creative Upcycling workshops to teach residents how to get creative with old stuff and turn used materials into something useful and beautiful.
Upcycling, also known as creative reuse, is the process of turning waste materials and used or unwanted products into new materials or items of better quality or environmental value – Creative Upcycling!
At the Creative Upcycling Communal Sculpture Workshop participants learnt how to work with found materials to create a combined group sculpture.
They came up with a group design and used materials and tools to create a combined artwork which is now displayed at The Bowerhouse. At an upcoming individual sculpture workshop, participants will learn how to work with used materials to create a personal artwork or sculpture.
There will be some examples of work and description of processes for making art and sculpture using recycled materials.
Another amazing local artist, Fiona McAulay, has also been running very popular mosaic workshops at The Bowerhouse. Fiona has been teaching participants indoor and outdoor mosaic techniques, working on a small project during the day and starting a quality take home project.
In keeping with the waste minimization theme, Council also hosted a MidWaste “Less is More! Declutter Your Home” workshop at Bellingen Library where participants worked through techniques for sorting unwanted and unused goods and learned about alternatives to sending these to landfill.
One great alternative to sending items to landfill is to drop them off at the Bowerhouse Community Reuse Shop; but please note all items will be viewed by the Waste Attendants before being accepted to ensure they are in an acceptable condition for resale.
The shop is open from 8:30am to 4pm Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, ph 6655 3777.
MidWaste workshops are a NSW EPA Waste Less, Recycle More initiative funded from the waste levy, which is collected when material destined for landfill is dropped at the Raleigh Waste Management Facility.
