Every year for the last 50 years, the Bellingen Girl Guides have come together to make floral wreaths for community groups to place on the War Memorial on ANZAC Day.

Over two days at Guide Hall, this tradition brings together girls of all ages, with their families, to hand weave and decorate the wreaths. This long tradition is also the Guides biggest annual fundraiser
As with every year, the Guides are calling for as many donations of firm stemmed garden flowers, as they are essential to creating a beautiful wreath to honour the service people of our community.
On Monday April 23 the group will first make the ‘bases’ – spiraling local bracken fern into the circular bases of each wreath, that are then bound with twine. The younger girls often enjoy the next step – jumping on each wreath to compact them enough to hold the flowers.
On Tuesday the 24th the group will decorate the bases with garden flowers donated from the local community. Families and daughters will sit down together to create floral designs by weaving each flower to cover the whole circle.
This year the Guides have received orders for over 25 wreaths, but are struggling to get enough garden flowers. As the older generation of Bellingen residents have moved into aged care, the tradition of growing traditional garden flowers and donating to the Guides has fallen away.
Donations of flowers can be dropped off any time at the Guide Hall on after 2pm on Monday or Tuesday at the Hall on Bowra Street (next to the old Bowling Club).
