Queen’s Baton Relay
Plans are coming together for the Queen’s Baton Relay with the organising committee, GOLDOC, having announced the baton bearers and the relay route. The Bellingen Local Working Group is very active behind the scenes to ensure the event runs smoothly through our Shire on February 1, 2018 (or Day 38 of the leg). You can learn about the Commonwealth Games and follow the Baton Relay online at https://www.gc2018.com. Further details on the Bellingen leg will be made available in the coming weeks.
Gleniffer Reserves Masterplan works
This plan was adopted by Council after extensive community consultation, engagement and public exhibition.
Whilst tentative dates for works to commence have been indicated for December 2017, this will be confirmed next week once project arrangements and further engagement has been finalised.
When works commence Arthur Keough Reserve will be closed to remove gravel from the bar in the Reserve and construct river bank stabilisation structures on the opposite bank in Earl Preston Reserve.
Additionally mature camphor laurel trees will be removed from the riparian zone in Earl Preston Reserve and large rocks will be placed 200 metres along Timboon Road to manage vehicle access and impacts.
Additional riparian rehabilitation works are scheduled in 2018 including invasive plant management and tree planting.
More information about the project can be found on Council’s Community Engagement Hub http://create.bellingen.nsw.gov.au/
Land for Wildlife Program
The not-for-profit organisation Envite Environment is offering a program of voluntary conservation on private land in the Coffs Harbour and Bellingen Local Government areas. Once registered, landholders will receive a free Environmental Property Assessment. Ecological assessments will be undertaken on properties to identify and manage environmental issues. The ‘Land for Wildlife’ program is applicable to properties that have a minimum of half a hectare of native vegetation. Registration of the property is free, non-legally binding and does not alter the title of the property or allow public access.
Landholders will receive a free Land for Wildlife sign to display on their front gate and gain access to education and training. For further information contact Envite on 6650 9170 or email mickw@envite.org.au.
Until next time,
