Thieves and vandals attacked the Urunga Surf Life Saving clubhouse at Hungry Head on Friday night, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage, leaving a trail of broken doors, windows and lights behind them and stealing valuable life saving equipment.

Club president Michael Dougherty said the break in most likely occurred between 6pm on Friday and 7am on Saturday.
“They damaged two external doors, one internal door and a window in the main building,” Mr Dougherty said. “Also the external door on our gear lock-up and external lights at the clubhouse.”
Items stolen included a compressor used to inflate the Inshore Rescue boat, gas cylinders, a rescue board and some tools for maintaining equipment.
An audit of First Aid equipment is underway to check if anything else is missing.
Craig Delahunty, who has been a member of the club for 30 years, led a team who worked most of Saturday morning to secure the building and will continue doing repairs.
“While the damage caused will be fixed it’s the senseless act of vandalism on a surf life saving facility that is most disappointing,” Mr Dougherty said.
“The Urunga SLSC celebrated 70 years of community service last year, this is a temporary set back and we are looking forward to continuing to provide a safe swimming beach for the residents and visitors to the Bellingen Shire.”
Police were called and took fingerprints and details regarding the break in. The event number from the police report is E66523008 if people have further information to provide to police.
