Players were keen to see if the stringent off season training regime of beer, port and pies has paid off!
A gala day at Port Macquarie in March saw a composite BUD’s and Coffs side maintain their impressive record.
A long gap with rain cancelling the South West Rocks tournament saw players itching for a game and joining forces with the Coffs Marlins to play a curtain raiser in the local derby vs the Coffs Gropers.
Two weeks ago, a good contingent headed to Grafton to take on sides from Brisbane to SWR and everywhere in between.
New boy Greg Bennett was a standout scoring six tries despite some dubious service from Garry “Prince” Matthews.
Danny “knightclub” along with Eric “the Red” Littler impressed and “Sutto” took the hit of the day but still managed to drive the bus home.
President Ian “fastest man over 60” Smith was awarded the “Busted Bum “Jacket (again!) for not knowing when the side was playing, (or being able to recognise the team colours on a field 10m away!) and filling in for the Gropers.
Last week saw a return bout of Marlins/Buds vs the Coffs Gropers. This was a spectacular display of running rugby.
The organisers are looking at the scheduling as the large crowd were in awe of the very slow, but skilful rugby on display. Darren “hitman” Taylor was a standout, Noddy helped make up the numbers and Alistair aka “Noisy” was even back in the fray.
Moree
The next game is a tournament in Moree on August 5.
There is still some room on the bus for anyone interested in going. This is traditionally a great weekend and bumps and bruises can be healed in the magical mineral spas. Contact Ian Smith ASAP if interested in attending.
Don’t forget our gala day at the “Graveyard” in late August, early September (date to be confirmed. We need all players, old and new on deck to make it the best gala day of the season! Watch this space for more information (or read your emails!)
For those still to sign up, contact President Ian “fastest man over 60”Smith at ianhsmith4@hotmail.com, Gary ”Tele or Herald” Howe at the Bello or Urunga Newsagency or Gary “Prince” Matthews at all the usual Urunga haunts.
