The project proved so successful that the program has been introduced permanently.
Residents are able to use specially designed recycling satchels to place clean, unwanted clothing and textiles in their yellow recycling bin for collection.
Once received at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Coffs Harbour the clothing is sorted into categories and delivered to local charities in the Bellingen Shire.
“Since the start of the program there has been a great response from residents with over 1500 kilograms being diverted from landfill and sent to charity shops in our region,” Bellingen Shire Mayor Dominic King said.
“This is a great achievement and a win-win for our community as it is a simple and easy way for residents to dispose of unwanted clothing while providing a free source of product to local charities who then sell the items in their stores or donate to those in need.”
Additional bags can be collected from the Bellingen Council Administration Centre or any of Council’s Waste Facilities.
