5.40pm: The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and State Emergency Service crews are on scene.
New England Police Sergeant Dan Betteridge has confirmed to Fairfax Media the two males involved, aged 27 and 31, set out for a bushwalk about 7am yesterday.
The trek took them longer than expected, so they decided to camp overnight.
Sergeant Betteridge understands that due to overnight weather – heavy rain and fog – the pair “was unable to find their way back due to fog and became disoriented”.
“They are stuck in what’s now a precarious position, which is too difficult to get out of due to rain and slippage,” Sergeant Betteridge said.
“The SES were deployed and phoned the Rescue Helicopter.”
Both men are experienced bushwalkers.
EARLIER: An injured pair of bushwalkers are stuck awaiting rescue from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
The Newcastle-based helicopter has been tasked on a primary mission to Dangar Falls, east of Armidale.
Two bushwalkers have got themselves stuck trying to find a way out of the bush.
They have run out of food and water, having set off yesterday.
The pair are uninjured and are talking with people above their position but cannot move any further due to the terrain.
