At around this time in the netball season, the best individual players are picked to join Coffs Harbour representative netball teams. These teams get extra training with top coaches and play extra games each week against teams in the draw that are one year older than them.

This week it was Bellingen’s turn to play one of the Coffs rep teams and so the girls were a little unsure of how they would go.
In the first quarter our shooters Jessica and Demi piled on a mass of points (makes you wonder if Demi’s dad finally installed that netball ring she’s been bugging him about). She had her eye in and just seemed to get goal after goal. Jessica was also in fine form and is such a reliable shooter for the team.
One of the most impressive things this week was watching the girls implement what they had been working on at training. After they lost their last game they worked hard on their passing speed and accuracy and this was such a noticeable improvement this week.
They also worked on a new defensive move that they fell victim to in their last game. Chelsea executed this new move flawlessly this week and it really threw the opposition when they were trying to shoot for goal.
Tayla was back in the team this week and was flying around the middle of the court with speed and precision as was Amanda, Fleur and Ellie. There were times there when the ball would move so fast from the centre down to the goal circle that if you blinked you’d miss them.
Willow changed things up a bit this week and worked as goal keeper instead of goal shooter and it looks like she enjoyed hassling those shooters as much as they used to hassle her. Leilani too is really improving down the defense end of the court and is making it tough for the opposition shooters to get some free space. Along with Chelsea’s new personal-space-invader move, it has become an inhospitable zone down that end of the court for the opposition shooters.
So with the coming together of lots of new skills and some ever improving existing skills, the Bellingen Kingfishers beat the Coffs Harbour Firebirds 22 to 5. To be fair, this Rep team has just got together so when the Bello girls meet them next time in the draw, they’ll have to put on their best game.
