The homeless, unemployed, or low income earners are finding it increasingly hard to afford suitable accommodation – and if they can, the costs involved to keep a house warm can often be too much.
“The rising cost of electricity and gas is a major issue for those trying to keep warm this winter,” St Vincent de Paul Society Mid North Coast executive officer, Michael Timbrell said.
“We always see an increased demand for assistance throughout winter; it is definitely our busiest time of the year.
“In the Coffs Coast region, which includes the Bellingen Shire, the Society distributed $500,000 of assistance during 2016 and this year we expect the demand to be even higher.”
Mr Timbrell said all financial assistance provided is raised from the sale of donated goods, and local volunteers who distribute assistance make a real difference in the community by helping those experiencing disadvantage get back on their feet.
“Sometimes they provide a listening ear as people share their stories and at other times people may need food on their table or help with an unexpected bill or crisis,” he said. “Whatever the circumstances, Vinnies volunteers are there to help.”
Given the increasing numbers of individuals and families needing assistance, Vinnies is calling for more volunteers.
“You might consider volunteering if you have some spare time, only a couple of hours a fortnight is required plus a desire to do good works in your local community, and help people. Volunteers from all backgrounds are welcome.”
These sentiments are backed up by local volunteer Yvonne Wynen.
“We all get a great sense of satisfaction when we really make a difference in someone’s life,” Yvonne said. “We always work in groups and training is provided. It’s a great way to give back to the community.”
