Out of the recent spate of TV reboots, Roseanne - the blue-collar family sitcom which ran from 1988 to 1997, and was shown locally on Network Ten - perhaps faces the most logistical hiccups, thanks to its incredibly meta original finale.

The season nine finale, which aired in May 1997, saw titular character Roseanne reveal that much of the show was a sham, a fictional book she was writing based on her life with all the 'real-life' tragedies fantastically reframed.

As such, Dan Conner - the series' knockabout dad, played with likeable joviality by John Goodman - had actually died from a heart attack suffered in the season eight finale.

The finale also revealed that Roseanne's sister Jackie (Laurie Metcalfe) was gay, and that Becky and Darlene's love interests - Mark (Glenn Quinn) and David (Johnny Galecki), respectively - were actually swapped.

After ABC last week confirmed the long-rumoured reboot had been officially green-lit, fans pondered how the show would pick up from its eventful finale.

"It's probably safe to assume that pretty much 'everything that went down' in the series finale will be ignored," TVLine reports, quoting an "insider" on the series.

In a hint of what the reboot might hold, the show's creator Roseanne Barr previously tinkered with her character's futures on her website.

In a "where are they now" post written in 2009, she insinuated that Dan had "faked his death", that Darlene (played by openly gay actress Sara Gilbert) had come out and had a baby with another woman, and that Roseanne and Jackie had opened their own medical marijuana dispensary.

Besides the revisionist finale, the show's Upfronts presentation last week addressed another elephant in the Roseanne revival writing room - who will play Roseanne's eldest daughter Becky.

The character was famously played by Lecy Goranson from its debut until partway through the fifth season in 1992 when, leaving the show for college, she was replaced by actress Sarah Chalke.

The two effectively shared the role over the remaining four seasons - sometimes even swapping week-to-week, an oddity the show's writers handled with goofy in-jokes about Becky's appearance - before Chalke took over fulltime for its ninth and final season.

According to ABC's announcement, Goranson will reclaim the Becky role in the reboot, with Chalke set to play another as-yet-undefined character.

The series' eight-episode return is set to air in the US around March 2018, with a local broadcaster yet to be confirmed.
