The Federal Government has announced a new standard under Australian consumer law that will provide more information about the eggs Australian consumers purchase.
Chair of the NSW Farmers’ Egg Committee, Bede Burke, said the labelling standard is an important move to secure the egg industry into the future.
“For years, farmers have been kept in limbo, unsure whether to invest or hold off depending on Government’s response to settling a free range standard,” Mr Burke said.
“The information standard will now allow for growth of the free range industry as it continues to meet consumer demand.
“We’re pleased that farmers and consumers know where they stand.”
The new information standard requires:
- Eggs labelled free range to have been laid by hens who’ve had meaningful and regular access to the outdoors
- Outdoor stocking density of 10,000 hens or less per hectare
- Stocking density displayed prominently on packaging
“Eggs are an affordable form of protein for Australians and egg farming is a multi-billion dollar industry that must be supported,” Mr Burke said.
“We acknowledge in particular the national advocacy of Egg Farmers of Australia, the NSW Government and the Federal Government’s commitment to this outcome.”
