“The competitors are going to need to have quality animals to be in the running for prizes. Entries are pouring in from some of the most noted studs and commercial producers from as far away as Tamworth,” he said.
Already there are entries representing some ten breeds of beef cattle. Within each breed, there will be judging of calves, cows and bulls. The featured class in the Beef Cattle section will be the “Led Steer Competition”, with local businesses – such as Sowintoo Charolais, Brooklana Angus Stud, Valley Quality Meats, Norco Rural, Promised Land Angus, Urunga Butchery, Thom’s Gourmet Meats & Smokehouse and more – generously providing a $1000 first prize and a $500 runner-up prize.
Apart from a range of entrants from commercial studs, there will also be support this year from high schools, with students from Bellingen, Macksville, Dorrigo and Bowraville showing their own cattle, and also judging and parading.
The judges for this year’s show will be Roger Evans from Bovine Scanning Services in Tamworth, who will judge the Beef Cattle section, and Brooke Hewitt from Bentley near Lismore, who will judge the Dairy section.
Roger Evans will run a Bovine Scanning Workshop on Friday, May 19 from 2-4pm at the showground. For more about the workshop contact Nick Hiller on 6655 3690, or Alan Peterson on 6655 1768.
