“headspace Coffs Harbour moved into new custom-designed premises last year, and they have been working with me and the North Coast Primary Health Network to secure additional funding for their service over the last few months,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“I am pleased to announce an additional $100,000 per year will be delivered to GenHealth by the North Coast Primary Health Network to further support the vital youth mental health services delivered by headspace on the Coffs Coast. GenHealth is the local organisation that runs headspace in Coffs Harbour.
“I am also pleased to announce that GenHealth will receive additional resources to establish a headspace outreach service in the Nambucca Valley to improve the availability of youth mental health services in that area.
“The Primary Health Network will work with GenHealth as well as local organisations, young people and their families, health professionals and the broader community to come up with effective solutions to the particular youth mental health needs in and around Nambucca Heads.
“headspace offers a safe and welcoming space for youth to talk to health professionals about depression, anxiety, bullying and relationship problems, as well as other issues of concern.
The centre in Coffs Harbour also coordinates a range of health care services for young people, offering mental health support, counselling, general health, sexual health and drug and alcohol services.
Community services such as education and employment support are also available.
“I am confident this funding will make a noticeable different for the young people in our communities,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“The important message for young people is that they are not alone. Friendly, caring help is available if you are struggling to deal with depression, anxiety, family troubles, bullying, or other issues.
“headspace has a long track record of helping young people who are dealing with these mental health challenges, and this additional funding will help the service reach more local youth.”
