Much to the relief of the volunteer gardeners, the Patient Wellness Garden at Bellingen Hospital has weathered summer with only a small number of plants succumbing to the lack of rain and extreme heat.

The Bellingen Shire Council (BSC) granted the Bellinger Health Action Group (BHAG) an exemption to water restrictions, allowing us to water for a one hour block once a week.
Coupled with a little intermittent rain, this was enough to keep the garden alive and flowering for the enjoyment of patients, visitors and hospital staff.
BHAG gardening volunteers started work in the hospital gardens in June 2010 and have so far amassed over 2000 hours of gardening. The Patient Wellness Garden was created by BHAG volunteers and the community in 2015.
A $5000 Environmental Grant from BSC was turned into an in-kind value of over $90,000 with generous community donations of plants, labour and materials.
If you are visiting the hospital, please take a look at the garden, and if you would like to join us on one of our gardening sessions, please visit our blog for further details: www.bhaggardeninggroup.wordpress.com
