Dave Baker and his wife Pack believe it is possible they captured the moment a UFO travelled across the Macleay Valley sky.
The couple took pictures of the the sunset from the viewpoint at Greenhill Quarry Thursday evening at about 7pm and later discovered an unusual object.
“We didn’t notice it at first but when we looked at it a second time, we noticed something very strange,” Mr Baker explained.
“My wife is very excited and believes it is a UFO but I am a little more skeptical – I can’t identify the shape but it definitely could be a spaceship.”
“I have never seen anything like this before.”
Mr Baker wants other people to judge the images for themselves but said “the truth is out there.”
What’s actually happened?
One of Australia’s most respected and well-known amateur astronomer, Dave Reneke, who lives on the Mid North Coast, said there is a very simple explanation for the unusual lights.
“There is nothing really out of the ordinary here. It seems to be a refraction of the Sun seen under unusual atmospheric conditions,” he explained.
“Particles of matter in the sky can scatter different colours at different angles creating colourful glowing skies at dusk and dawn.
“Scattering of ice crystals are responsible for halos and sun dogs, which the photo has. This can also be a particularly spectacular example of common reflections inside a standard digital camera, showing a most spectacular example of atmospheric lensing.
“The shooter would not see this through the camera lens. Internal reflections also have the distinctive coloured halo effect.”
