Bellingen’s Max Kornhauser is also part of the squad as one of three umpires.
All up, the squad comprises 25 male athletes and 14 female athletes, who have been chosen to take part in the program that is a partnership between the Academy and AFL NSW/ACT.
The program has been specifically designed to assist athletes and umpires progress to the next level within the talent pathway by supporting them with technical skill development, game sense training, fitness testing and theoretical knowledge.
North Coast Academy of Sport Executive Director, John Kincade, said that the Academy is excited to have AFL on board.
“The AFL has a well deserved reputation as one of the most professional sports in the country and the fact that they have chosen to partner with the Academy is positive recognition of the outstanding work the Academy has done over many years in the area of talent development,” he said.
“We’re really excited by AFL NSW/ACT deciding to not only support male athletes, but to also have dedicated spaces for female athletes ahead of the introduction of the AFL Women’s competition in 2017. We’ve also included three outstanding umpires who have been recognised at state level as having the potential to make their mark on the national stage.”
John said that in the past 12 months AFL has grown and not just with players – there’s been new sponsors coming on board to grow the game.
“An exciting development for the fledgling program has been the C.ex Group coming on board as the program’s major sponsor,” John said.
“The generous support received from C.ex Group as major sponsor of the AFL program means that we’ve been able to minimise the cost of involvement to athletes, which has really helped to attract an outstanding level of talent in the first year as the program establishes itself. We extend our thanks to the C.ex Group for their amazing, ongoing support of our programs and the North Coast region’s athletes.”
