The sweltering backdrop of Dicken's Court two days before Christmas is the setting to this fun little tale of miscommunication, mad ambition, and the overwhelming desire to change one's own situation, whether a young apprentice mechanic, an out of work larrikin, a good-natured yet naive social misfit, or a pretentious status seeker, this play is awash with personality.

After his wife leaves him, Aussie Battler Bob Jones is looking for a way to change his situation. With no job and his son Foster paying his bills, Bob decides to enter a Christmas lights competition, that if won could mean an end to his financial woes and those of his close mate and neighbor Eugene, who has found himself in an uncomfortable situation with some Russian mobsters.
This play in all respects is very authentically Australian, while most stories with the backdrop of Christmas present a winter wonderland in mind, the appropriately titled “Summer Wonderland” creates an image closer to home, that of 30+ degree days and the sound of Currawongs and Magpies in the distance, the dialogue is also dripping in the Aussie slang we all know too well.
With a great mixture of energetic performances from a variety of Dorrigo locals, this play is not lacking in talented players, all provide delightful character flaws and quirks incredibly unique to their particular character, which make them work wonderfully and naturally off each other. The characters blend themselves incredibly well to the set, which itself looks fantastic, with vibrant colours and images that dazzle the eye.
It's very clear that this is a play where a lot of careful consideration has been made on the part of those working on this production, with an excellent cast, lovely direction, and great sets. If you are interested in a fun night out then I highly recommend a trip to the Dorrigo Dramatic Club to see “Summer Wonderland”, with great characters, great performances, entertaining dialogue and a unique plot.
“Summer Wonderland” shall not disappoint.
