The past month has seen some great fishing, inshore and offshore.
Estuaries: The flathead have made themselves available, gorging themselves ready to spawn.
The winter bream are still in good numbers in the estuaries, making for some great fun on light tackle. Throwing soft plastics, Vibes and Crank Baits on 1-4kg spin gear has been producing the goods. You will often encounter the odd luderick taking a liking to these lures also.
In the past month there has been great numbers of tailor on the beaches, off the headlands and in the estuaries. Following the tailor have also been the mulloway and we have seen some excellent captures of big jew up into the 30+kg mark from the beach.
Offshore: Fisherman are being treated to those big winter reds (Snapper). The closer inshore reefs at sun up and sun down are producing some great quality fish and will continue to do so for another couple of months. Once the sun is up try heading a little dealer around the 40-60 metre depth. The Shimano Lucanus Jigs have been the stand out lure and consistently producing the goods in that deeper water.
This weekend the Urunga Anglers Club are holding a combined Deep Sea and Beach Rock Estuary and Freshwater Competition, remember there is categories for Catch and Release Bream, Whiting, Flathead, Drummer, Grouper and now Snapper. Plus all the usual species to be weighed also.
