Snr Const Bamford, a mother of one, was with her colleague Sergeant Christopher Stafford when they were called to an incident at a Kempsey home in 2012.
The police officers were surrounded by distraught family members as both commenced CPR and Cardiac Compressions on the man, who had fallen off his chair into a large garden bed.
“Emergency services told them an ambulance was 45 minutes away, so Snr Const Bamford and Sgt Stafford had to take this resuscitation on themselves; the man had no pulse and wasn’t breathing,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“Talking to Snr Const Bamford about what happened that day really brings home how confronting, dangerous and often traumatic the day-to-day work of a police officer can be.
“What our local Coffs Harbour police officers, and those all around the country, do for us all, should be commended. The hours can be long and erratic, and it is often a thankless task,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
Snr Const Bamford, a 16-year police veteran, received the Federal Member’s Award for her efforts in what she described as an ‘extremely difficult resuscitation’. The man was eventually taken to hospital by ambulance, but he passed away.
In addition to her Federal Member’s Award, Snr Const Bamford has also been awarded the Royal Life Saving Association Commendation for Bravery by the New South Wales Governor David Hurley.
