The program, which is managed out of the Bellingen Youth HUB, started over 18 months ago and in that time has helped 10 young people get their full licence, while 16 more are currently being supported by 18 volunteer drivers.
“This is another great example of the Bellingen Community rallying together to support our youth,” the HUB coordinator, Dean Besley said.
“Our young learner drivers are required to have a minimum of 120 hours up in their log book before they apply for their licence, and sometimes that is a difficult for families to manage alone.
“With our program, the learners do regular hours with one of our volunteers which supplement their parent’s supervision and any other professional driving lessons they have. Apart from support on the mandatory hours, the bonus is that they get to hang with some of our great community mentors”.
Lily, daughter of program founder Linda Dalton, was supported by volunteer supervisor Mary Bernadette, who interdentally, has the reputation of being the team’s “perfect parking instructor”.
Any young learner drivers may join the program. Just drop-in to the HUB or phone 6655-0381 for details. New volunteer supervisor drivers are also welcome to join in the fun.
