Despite Mr Hartsuyker telling Fairfax Media in December and it was only speculation that he was not interested in the top position, he announced his leadership ambitions during a whistle-stop visit to the Hastings on Friday.
Mr Hartsuker said that the time was right for him to be formally considered a leader within the National Party.
“What Party members are telling me is that they want a strong, stable, experienced team that will work in Government to deliver the best outcomes for regional Australia,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“For the last 14 years my focus has been on representing the people of my electorate of Cowper and more broadly the interests of regional Australia in both Shadow and Ministerial positions and as such believe I have a lot to offer as part of a strong and effective leadership team.”
Mr Hartsuyker’s announcement came a day after the Deputy Prime Minister and Nationals leader Warren Truss, appeared to doze off while in Parliament.
Speculation has surrounded Mr Truss’ leadership with his retirement expected to be announced soon. Nationals deputy leader, Barnaby Joyce is expected to replace him as leader.
Mr Hartsuyker said if he does become the nation Party leader, he is still committed to delivering for regional Australia and the Cowper electorate.
“Regional Australia is not just a great place to live, it’s a great place to work and the National Party is committed to delivering the infrastructure of the future to support growth, encourage business to grow in regional areas, create jobs and grow the regional economy,” Mr Hartsuyker said
