The man allegedly approached the 24-year-old woman, who was standing in a front yard on Federal Road at Seven Hills about 1.30am.
Police said two other men tried to gain entry to the house as the man punched and threatened the woman with a knife.
The three men then allegedly left in the woman's 2007 model Commodore, which was found burnt out in Toongabbie shortly after.
Paramedics said the woman was uninjured. Police have established a crime scene at the house and the car has been towed for forensic examination. They are trying to establish if the woman knew any of the men.
One of them is described as a medium-build Caucasian with a moustache, goatee and short hair. The other men were described as speaking with "New Zealand" accents.
