Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Warren Truss today viewed the potential route for the proposed Coffs Harbour Bypass, which has been identified by the New South Wales Government as a future priority.
“I met with Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker today to discuss potential projects in the region for consideration for future construction programmes,” Mr Truss said.
“The Australian Government will consider projects on their merits and in consideration with the New South Wales Government and evaluation from Infrastructure Australia.
“In the 2015-16 Budget the New South Wales Government committed $200 million towards the project, subject to a business case being prepared and finalised. The outcome of this business case would inform the Australian Government’s position.
“In the interim, the Australian Government is continuing its commitment to deliver a fully duplicated Pacific Highway to the Queensland border by the end of the decade.”
Mr Hartsuyker said he was pleased to meet with Mr Truss onsite to view the proposed location of the Bennett Road interchange and discuss this project and other potential projects in the region.
“I have been engaging with the community with regards to the need to plan for the bypass, particularly in light of continued pressure on local government roads, as well as the need to plan for the final major link in duplicating the Pacific Highway between Hexham and the Queensland border,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“I have discussed this with Mr Truss and we both agree that strong transport links are important for the local community, whether that is getting from A to B in Coffs Harbour or getting goods to market quickly.
“The East Coast corridor is also experiencing significant growth in traffic so the Coffs Harbour Bypass is vital in strengthening the road network to cater for this growth.
“I look forward to working with the New South Wales Government on progressing the project.”
NSW member for Coffs Harbour Andrew Fraser said the New South Wales Government has committed $200 million in the 2015-16 Budget towards the project, subject to a business case being prepared and finalised.
