A 27-year-old man left a licensed premises and walked west along West High Street, Coffs Harbour, about 10.15pm Saturday.
When at the intersection of Lyster Street and West High Street, the man became involved in an altercation with an unidentified person.
The 27-year-old was punched, fell and hit his head on the road.
The unidentified person was last seen running south down Lyster St. Police have not been able to obtain a description of them at this stage.
The victim was taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital with head injuries.
He is reported to be in a critical condition.
