More than that, it is being decontaminated of all the waste materials, including heavy metals, that have remained there, untouched, since the site closed in 1974.
The push to finally get the site cleaned up began some three years ago and since July the machines and crews have been on-site methodically working their way through the complex task.
The $4 million project is due to be completed in early 2016 when the site will be returned to the local community as a recreation space.
