Two local youths have proven the value of the shire’s driver support program - as Nisha Rajapakse and Marni Young now have their driver’s licence.

Using ‘Two Way Street’, each completed the compulsory 120 hours of supervised driving and are competent P-plate drivers.
While Nisha had assistance from her family with both her mother Nadira and her stepfather Peter taking her for regular driving lessons, the Two Way Street supervisors, Margot Pleasant and Anne Simpson, also spent time driving with Nisha and Marni to assist them in attaining the required number of hours.
Two Way Street started last year and has run been through the Bellingen Youth Hub. The program provides assistance for young people who need support to obtain their driving licence, particularly those whose family or friends are unable to give driving supervision. There is no charge for the assistance given to young people, however they are asked to do community volunteer work in exchange.
Two Way Street has three cars for use in the program and a trained team of more than 20 supervisors.
Coordinator Paul Tipper told the Courier-Sun: “We are always looking for more assistance so any new driver supervisor volunteers are always welcome. Just an hour a week helps. Any young person needing additional hours to get driving experience is always welcome to call at the Youth Hub and join the program”.
