No doubt training this week will aim at hitting the back of the net!
The men’s first and reserve grade squad has been well supported by the U/17s who themselves were crowned 2015 minor premiers and look grand final bound with 12 wins from 15 starts. Coached by Craig Simpson and assisted by the legendary Phil Lynch most of the boys have experienced senior football at The Cabbage Patch. Head coach Paul Pomroy is a firm believer in this pathway for up and coming young players commenting that including the likes of Andrew Trist, Jake Ashley brothers Radford, Joshy Jarrett, Saxon Spillet and Matty Marsden can only bolster their skills and improve the Raiders player base. Sage words indeed from North Coast Football’s 2014 coach of the year along with the reintroduction of the ‘Summer 6 a side’ this year at the Cabbage Patch.
If success be judged on results, Pomroy must feel successful, from 20 starts the Raiders first grade have amassed 17 wins, two draws and a solitary loss. Crowned champions in 2014 after beating Boambee 3-1 in the 2014 grand final, the Raiders again have the credentials to play in the big show at the International Stadium on August 29.
The women’s first grade team are just putting the finishing touches to an outstanding season of football. From success in the pre-season Nambucca Challenge Cup the women have steadily improved and put together some impressive team performances during their campaign. The effort and perseverance that the girls have applied to their football became increasingly evident as the season drew to an end with dominant wins against their closest rivals. The team has scored 64 goals over the 18 weeks of the competition (no other team scored more) and had four players listed in the golden boot top 20.
The squad is now entering the finals series and although there is no doubt there will be work to do believe they have the game and the players to go all the way. After their win on Saturday against Coffs Harbour (2-1 in that one) reinforcing their self-belief, the girls are perfectly poised to realise their ambition to play in the grand final later this month which would be the perfect way to round off a stellar season of football.
