It is believed this is the first time bison (wrongly referred to as buffalo) have appeared on the plateau.
The bison are part of Kendall Neilson’s Dungog herd.
They are highly familiar with the routine of camp drafting and make excellent training animals because they are slower, calmer and more predictable than cattle.
A fully grown male bison can stand 180cm at the shoulders and weigh up to 1000kg.
The herd of more than a dozen are touring northern NSW working with pony clubs and adult camp drafters.
The visit proved a hit with young riders from Dorrigo Pony Club and district camp drafters.
