This year’s festival is different as it blends traditional/classical music of western and non-western traditions through the various performances and workshops. It’s engaging, enriching and will inspire local artists and potential artists of all ages.
The festival’s broadened focus on world music presents Tángalo for the first time in Bellingen. Formed in 2011 with a fierce desire to inspire and revitalize Sydney’s Argentine tango dance culture, Tángalo is the brainchild of Emily-Rose Šarkova and Owen Salomé.
Tángalo’s musical craft includes music that is both ‘danceable’ and also pushes boundaries so that the group continues to find its own voice. Tángalo use Violin, Guitar, Double Bass, Flute, Bandoneon, Piano and Voices to create a sound that is vividly personal. Instrumental lines and impassioned vocals reference both the poetic background of tango music, and something considerably more modern. The Tango itself is another focus of the festival, with a dance workshop on Saturday morning, followed by the opportunity for participants to dance the night away at the evening concert. Argentine Tango dancing basics will be provided by a combination of Tángalo and local instructors.
The Music By Youth Workshop will continue, thanks to the generosity of the Camp Creative committee. This wonderful initiative to support local young composers will remain for three years as a fitting tribute and memorial to local hero Peter Nance. On Sunday afternoon please join the local acapella choir, Akabella, to Sing a World of Songs. The Festival is grateful for the sponsorship by Limelight Magazine, the Bellingen Shire Courier Sun and Camp Creative. The Festival dates for 2015 are September 18 – 20. Tickets will be available from May 1. Make regular visits to bellingenmusicfestival.com.au for updates on the program, information about the artists and how to get tickets.
