Hosted by the NSW Nature Conservation Council (NCC) and Bellingen Environment Centre, it will also feature an analysis of the NSW Coalition’s re-election, and an examination of the increasing role that Indigenous communities are playing in the management of Country.
Organise of the event and NCC CEO, Kate Smolksi said she was excited to be holding this year’s conference on the North Coast because there is a high level of environmental awareness in this region.
“The state of the environment concerns everybody in NSW, but it is of particular interest to the North Coast where people know from experience that healthy communities and viable economies depend absolutely on healthy ecosystems,” Kate said.
“This is one of most stunning places in Australia, with an astonishing variety of ecosystems, plants and animals. Unfortunately, the forests, rivers, and wetlands in this region are threatened by a range of pressures, including unsustainable native forest logging, the Pacific Highway upgrade, and urban sprawl.
“The NSW Regional Environment Conference is an opportunity for conservationists from across the region to come together to share experiences and to develop strategies to tackle these threats, and grapple with some of the state’s other pressing environmental issues.”
Ms Smolksi said the conference was open to the public, and encouraged anyone with an interest in nature conservation and environmental protection to register by going to the NCC website www.nature.org.au.
