In Spring, Dorrigo bursts into bloom. Summer days are beautiful but, in Autumn, Dorrigo shows its rustic rural charms. A slight crispness to the air, the turn of autumnal leaf, the ruby red of the crabapples all signal the turn of the season. Trucks rumble through town laden with Dorrigo spuds hewn from the rich red soils of the plateau. Community groups raffle firewood in the streets, getting ready for Winter. The spinners and weavers oil their wheels and the fresh night air provides welcome relief to the residents of the Plateau. Life is good, the harvest is in, and creativeness abounds.
“Our Oxheart tomatoes were the best we’ve had in years”… “Those potatoes are so creamy” …“Best batch of potato vodka eva, as for the Nocino (green walnut liqueur) Red Dirt Distillery has done it better than ever before” … “My best crop of Nashi pears ever, I dried them too”… “Honey?, we’ve got honey, honey”… “We didn’t get mould on our pumpkins”… “Pumpkins, don’t talk about the pumpkins, they just kept on growing” … “My pumpkin is bigger than yours“.
Such a good season has produced a wonderful pumpkin competition. You can see the biggest pumpkins in the land at Made in Dorrigo on Saturday in the main street. The biggest, the best tasting pumpkin, the tastiest pumpkin scone, the best soup and the most perfect pumpkin bread....the Show Society has it covered!!
