It’s part of a $40 million state-wide package by the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government to invest in more than 380 walking and cycling projects.
Four (including Bellingen Shire) new bike and walking paths are planned for the Mid North Coast:
Wauchope town centre pedestrian crossing points, kerb extensions, traffic calming – $300,000
Redesign of the primary retail sector in Kempsey - $108,000; and review current Kempsey and South West Rocks Pedestrian Plan (2003) as well as including other shire villages and pedestrian links between villages – $63,707.
Ms Pavey told the Courier-Sun the shire residents will benefit from this massive funding injection, with the project to be delivered in partnership with council from July.
“The infrastructure will provide a huge boost for residents and businesses – completing crucial missing links in the city’s/town’s walking and cycling network, and providing better connections between local suburbs and to public transport hubs,” Mrs Pavey said.
“If we want to encourage more people to leave the car at home and get active, we need to provide access to safe, convenient and connected waking and cycling networks.
“This investment is about connecting people and places and making a difference to the way residents move around their communities.”
In a statement to the Courier-Sun council’s general manager Liz Jereny said: Council is pleased to receive this advice which relates to the Walking Communities infrastructure program and is specifically related to the Waterfall Way, Bellingen CBD project.
“The funding will enable the detailed design phase following the completion of the Active Transport Urban Design concept plan which is currently underway.”
