Driven by the southerly conditions, swells are expected to gradually increase from tonight with a peak of up to 4 metres expected on Friday morning. These peak conditions are forecast to only last for a few hours with swells expected to ease to between 2-3 metres later on Friday.

Surf Life Saving NSW Operations Manager Adam Weir said people using coastal rock platforms for activities such as rock fishing and walking should take the time to note the conditions.

“The longer swell period of 14 seconds is something that people should definitely be aware of as the ocean is a dynamic environment where things can change very quickly. Conditions can look benign and then a larger set of waves can come through and catch you out,” Mr Weir said.

“It’s important for everyone who uses our coast whether it’s for swimming, fishing, boating or surfing to take the time to analyse the conditions before heading out.”

A south-easterly is expected to strengthen again on Saturday morning creating consistent 2.5 metres sets with a 14 second swell period throughout the state’s south.

It is anticipated that these conditions will be experienced on the state’s north and far north coast on Saturday afternoon.

General Safety Tips During Dangerous Surf Conditions:

Avoid rock fishing and water activities on exposed beaches/rock-shelves.

Only swim at patrolled beaches, between the red & yellow flags.

Check the official Bureau of Meteorology forecast before undertaking rock fishing and water activities.

Boaties should seek advice from Marine Rescue NSW and always wear a lifejacket.
