That ground breaking class was only possible because the elders shared traditional stories with both indigenous and non-indigenous participants. Indeed, one of the most memorable scenes at a Camp Creative farewell concert was the participation of Swiss nationals in the ‘welcome to country’ ceremony.
Over time, additional courses have addressed indigenous dance, storytelling and the development of aboriginal language. In 2015 Camp Creative will host three highly respected tutors, Aunty Shaa Smith, Uncle Michael Jarrett and Uncle David Carriage.
Gumbaynggirr Language and Culture will introduce you to the world of the local indigenous people of Gumbaynggirr country, who have lived here for tens of thousands of years. Uncle Michael will take you on the dreaming path and tell you stories while teaching you this ancient language as he introduces the land, water, rivers, mountains and the earth.
Sharing Culture, Sharing Stories will be co-presented by Aunty Shaa Smith and Uncle David Carriage. You will be taken on a learning journey where “you will be given your place in the story” and in accordance with the cultural way, ‘men’s business’ and ‘women’s business’ will be respected. This will be done creatively through song, dance, language, art and story.
Camp Creative coordinator Bob Stockton told the Courier-Sun, “this is a unique and generous chance to learn about indigenous culture. I have been fortunate to work with all three tutors and they are outstanding. I doubt you’ll see anything like this in other areas.”
