This day will showcase the activities that take place within our surf lifesaving club and ways that members of our local community can get involved and be safe. As well as beach patrols, we also do roving patrols using rescue boats and water craft, and we’re constantly running courses so people can become surf lifesavers and learn other important lifesaving and life skills.
There are many different kinds of members, from junior members, our Nippers, right through to life members who have served their club and community for many years. There are all sorts of reasons people join a club, whether it’s to help the community, get involved in surf sports, be part of our rescue response teams, to help out in administration, or just for the social aspect. In surf lifesaving, everything is voluntary and there’s something for everyone.
We welcome all members, but at our club we are particularly keen to attract active patrol members and radio operators. Surf lifesaving has something for everyone, regardless of whether you are a strong swimmer or not. We are currently short of radio officers so if you are keen to become involved but do not want to become a surf lifesaver, perhaps this might be for you. It involves working from the Hungry Head Beach tower where your role would be as communications officer working the radio as well as visually patrolling the beach for any dangers. Training is available to anybody who is interested however a working knowledge of surf dangers would be advantageous.
Joining our club is easy. People can either sign up on the day or they can ring club president Vanessa Nugent on 0447 688-847 or Club Captain Garry Howe on 6655-1449. If you are interested in joining your child up with the Junior Club please contact Megan Pengelly on 0412 106-537.
Our surf club relies on the support of the public and our community to continue to put patrols on our beaches. Rescue equipment is expensive and needs to be regularly replaced and our facilities need to be maintained to protect our members. So come down and show your support for the great work our volunteers do.
