The Diggers jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded and two out, Jonas Hedges singled in one run, then Neil Peever drove in two more.
Bellingen held the All Stars scoreless in the bottom of the first. With two out and a runner on second, Gareth Gray made a sensational diving catch at shortstop for the third out to keep the All Stars off the scoreboard.
The Diggers struck for seven more runs in the top of the second inning. With a runner on first and two out, Gavin Moroney and Damion Treloar each singled to load the bases, then Gray cleared the bases with a monstrous grand slam home run. Rhys Bonventi followed with a double. Mick Nelson drove him in and then scored all the way from second base on a wild pitch that eluded the All Stars catcher. Hedges capped the scoring with another long home run.
The All Stars got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the second. Bellingen was retired in order in the top of the third inning, and the All Stars tacked on one more run the bottom of the third to narrow the gap to 10-3.
Bellingen padded their lead in the top of the fourth inning with Gray home for the second time with Treloar aboard and two out to make the score 12-3. In the bottom of the fourth, the Diggers looked to have the game in hand, with the score 12-5, when Treloar notched a strikeout for the second out of the inning.
However the game was far from over when Coffs Harbour mounted a come-back, pushing five more runs across to narrow the gap to 12-10. It was left to Diggers player Nelson who snared a pop-up to secure the final out and the premiership.
The Diggers have now won back-to-back B Grade premierships in the first two years of existence. The club plans to expand next season, entering teams in the junior and A grade competitions as well.
