This community update seeks to advise on the progress of the restoration of Newry Island Bridge. Works Program:
The following works have been undertaken.
• Establishment of a site compound and installation of appropriate traffic control
• Closure of the Kalang River to boating traffic during the restoration works
• Relocation of the water and sewer services
• Construction of floating scaffolding under the bridge
• Delivery of the new bridge components
• Initial preparation for bridge restoration
During the remainder of this week, work will continue in preparation for demolition of the first three spans of the bridge from the Highway end and installation of support brackets for new GlulamTM timber girders.
The demolition of the first three spans and construction of the new superstructure will occur over theweekend commencing Saturday 23 August 2014.
Full Closures of Bridge:
Full closure of the bridge is necessary to enable the restoration work and will take place on the following dates:
The bridge will be closed from 6.00am on Saturday 23 August 2014 and it is anticipated that it will reopen at 6.00am on Monday 25 August 2014. Vehicular and pedestrian access to Newry Island will not be available during these times.
In the event of the need to contact Emergency Services during times of closure the following is provided for your convenience:

Any residents with a medical condition should take appropriate precautions prior to any closures. Note: Should it be necessary for you make a call to any emergency service, please state “I am a resident of Newry Island and the bridge is closed”.
Future Works:
The remaining three spans of the bridge will be replaced during nightworks and are anticipated to occur on the following dates with full closure of the bridge during these times:
• From 7.00pm on Monday, 1 September to 7.00am on Tuesday 2 September 2014
• From 7.00pm on Monday 8 September to 7.00am on Tuesday 9 September 2014
• From 7.00pm on Thursday 11 September to 7.00am on Friday 12 September 2014
The next Community Update will be issued prior to above closures.
The 3 tonne load limit will continue until further notice as essential works on permanent fastening of the bridge decking is completed. The river will remain closed until the scaffolding and water and sewer pipes are removed from the bed of the Kalang River.
Nightworks:
The bridge restoration works are being carried out over as short as time as possible including night work.
Every effort will be made to minimise noise by using appropriate equipment (eg hydraulic chainsaws), reducing reversing vehicle movements and verbal communications being kept at a low decibel level at all times.
Council apologises in advance for any inconvenience caused by any construction noise.
