Last weekend saw the Urunga Anglers Club hold their Annual General Meeting. The board and committee have no changes except the shock announcement that club president of 32 years Wal Tyson said he will not stand as club president in 2015. He’s shoes are tough to fill, and on behalf of the members of the club and the committee, I hope you enjoy your final year in this position and you are aware all appreciate everything you have done, not only for the club but the community over the past 32 years. Good on you Wal.

Some good news for Coffs Coast lure fishermen - I have formally proposed that the Urunga Anglers Club hold a inaugural Urunga Estuary Sport Fishing Tournament in November. The Tournament will be held over a weekend and include; catch and release, lure and fly fishing.
The target species will be the popular dusky flathead known to grow to lengths of greater than one metre and are well-populated throughout the Bellingen and Kalang River systems. The humble flathead is often overlooked as a sport species, but when targeted on light finesse gear, can be much fun. There aggressive ambush style of feeding makes them a great species to target with lures such as soft plastics, hard bodied divers and flies.
The concept is to encourage a social tournament environment to cater for the modern lure anglers, with key features, such as, Lucky Draw prizes and category trophies to attract sport-fishermen from far and wide. We hope to make this event more than just a fishing competition and will strive to include a great prize pool, a list of speakers to assist with educating anglers of the importance of catch and release, and new innovative techniques and products. So be sure to keep your eye out for more information in the near future.
This weekend will be the first Beach Rock Estuary and Freshwater competition for the year. We are hoping for a great turn out of competitors and encourage anyone young and old wishing to join in the fun this year to come along on Sunday at noon to the weigh-in at the second boat ramp behind the Urunga Golf Course. As always Nola will have the barbecue fired up and there will be some great prizes up for grabs.
Until next time, good luck to every one planning on having a fish and remember to only take what you need.
