Cattle Program at the 2014 Show
Preparations for the Cattle exhibition at the 2014 Bellingen Show are well and truly underway and it’s shaping up to be a very exciting program. Although the main show program begins on Saturday, May 24, the cattle program will commence a day early, on Friday. This change has come about in an effort to offer more variety to cattle producers and cattle enthusiasts.
The Froday program begins with a ‘plumping up’ of the cattle. A Beef Cattle Assessment & Training Workshop. Participants will have the opportunity to access the professional knowledge of one of Australia’s leading agricultural leaders, chief operating officer of the Australian Agricultural Company (AACo), Troy Setter. Mr Setter’s focus for the workshop will include market specifications, how to interpret EBV’s, and how to successfully show and parade animals. The Workshop will run from 9am to 2pm and is open to anyone who wishes to attend. There is a registration fee of $10 per head.
Following the workshop there will be an open led heifer/steer competition starting at 3pm. The overall winner should be pleased with the $125 in prize money up for grabs. Entries are expected to be of a very high standard as past and potential exhibitors were informed about this event well in advance, giving them plenty of time to prepare their cattle. With the knowledge just gained at the workshop, this is the ideal time for exhibitors to put into practice the knowledge they have just acquired. Potential exhibitors should be aware that they do not have to participate in the workshop to be eligible to enter the heifer/steer competition and vice-versa. A cattleman’s barbecue at 6pm on the cattle parading lawn will conclude Friday’s program.
Saturday sees the start of both the dairy and regular beef programs. Reading the cattle schedule (which is now available for download on the Bellingen Show website), entrants will notice the inclusion of a few extra enticing monetary prizes, particularly in both the dairy and beef Junior Parader Section. Early indications are that exhibits will be up in both dairy and beef on previous years.
This year sees the start of a push by organisers to encourage participation from further afield and a large number of entries is expected. Exhibitors are encouraged to get their entries in as early to avoid disappointment. Cattle stewards want to make the Bellingen Show a major regional competition and well known amongst cattle producers, and so far are well on the way to achieving this aim.
For more information and access to entry forms, visit the show website at
