It was with considerable disappointment that I read the article in your issue of Jan 2 in which the Dorrigo Caravan Park operator decried the use of Roses Park at Thora for overnight camping, and in so doing, criticised the work of the volunteers who maintained the park.

I have the choice of staying in a hotel, a motel, a caravan park or a minimal cost or even free camp!
I also have the choice of buying an Armani Suit, Kmart jeans, or Vinni's fashions. Armani cannot force me to buy their suit and a hotellier cannot force potential van park patrons to use his accommodation. The caravan park must adhere to the same rules and community standards.
Provide the service and you will attract the custom.
People choose to free camp for either personal freedom, or financial reasons, or both.
Most of these campers will not stay in a van park regardless of the closing of some free camps.
The volunteer is a major resource in Australia and has helped create our unique ''Aussie Mateship''. Look at surf lifesavers, RFS, and community groups all over.
I thank the volunteers at Thora for their work to encourage visitors to their shire by making it a better and more friendly place.
Council should thank them also.
