Greg and Jeanne Speers say freedom camping is costing their business big dollars every year and previous complaints to Council have fallen on deaf ears.
“The RTA told me they support overnight roadside stays in specific designated areas which allow to caravan to stay legally for 36 hours.
“In one case, a camper stayed for over six weeks.”
Mr Speers said his Dorrigo Mountain Resort was inspected regularly by Bellingen Council to ensure they complied with the many statutory regulations that the State Government demands of for caravan and camping areas.
“We bought this business in 1989 and have paid annual fees to Council and the State Government for the privilege of operating a park.
“This we believe is an unfair and unacceptable trading position.”
“The area should be rezoned and an application made for a licence to run a caravan park.
“We don’t have an objection to this course of action but as things stand, we are concerned Council is turning a blind eye to what is really going on at the Rose’s caravan park reserve.”
