Mass brawl spills from shopping centre

19 Mar, 2010 09:41 AM
Six men have been charged over a terrifying brawl at a shopping centre in Melbourne’s east yesterday.

Police said the fight erupted at the Whitehorse Plaza shopping centre in Box Hill and involved nine men from two groups.

Reports allege some combatants carried knives and used chairs to attack the second group, with the fight spilling on to Whitehorse Road and surrounding streets.

Paramedics were called but treated only one man, a 19-year-old who claimed he had not been injured but was vomiting.

He was taken to Maroondah Hospital in a stable condition.

One bystander suffered a cut to the head but did not need medical treatment.

About 5pm, police arrested nine men over the fight.

Six men, aged 18 to 23, from the eastern and south-eastern suburbs, were charged with affray.

The three other men were released without charge.

The six will appear in the Ringwood Magistrates Court at a later date.

Witness ‘‘Kelly’’ told Radio 3AW today ‘‘some very, very tall fellows were whistling and calling out’’ when another group responded to the noise.

‘‘Eventually it turned into a bit of a face off, a bit of a face off, and then it turned into a full-on brawl,’’ she said.

She said the two groups were from different cultural backgrounds and the fight went on for ‘‘10 to 15 minutes up and own the mall’’.

All ethnic groups who do not obey Australian law whilst on Australian soil should be sent back where they came from immediately, never to return to this country, this should be part of the immigration and visa agreements

I rang council on Monday,15 about an old syle ambulance parked at an insane angle that to my knowledge has been there since the 9th of March(and it was there early, i was there at 9am on the 9th) at their James St, Hamilton, council car park, there sign says 2hr parking limit !!!, it's still there, same insane angle. i spoke to bicycle police in Hamilton the next day and they went to check it out, today the 19th and it still remains. My point being they have laws why can't they enforce them?? and why does it take so long when its so bleeding obvious, council always screaming poor mouth and missing an opportunity to make a bomb. Unable to do a thing - WHAT DOES IT TAKE.....................

omg why are ppl writing these hate comments, this proves to me why other ppl in the community regard Aussies as racist. U ppl are too quick to judge without a clue to what really caused the issue. All u see or hear about on TV, police etc is the end result of something, not the start. Don't believe this bias media, the cover one side of the story to brainwash the community and the media seems to be succeeding in putting a certain group into the spot light. I have to admit that this country is becoming an openly racist society that fails to gather all the facts for well thought opinion. PPl are deliberating taking advantage of this poor judgment by the community by Assaulting the African Youth, and when the African youth try to defend themselves by taking the fight to their attackers, the community automatically puts the blame on them, that's is unjust and appalling. What happened in Box hill few days ago was exactly the same, Islander ppl firstly punching and attacking the African kids enjoying their freedom of movement, the Africans simply took the fight to the aggressors and now the community is whinging about them. CAN'T THEY PROTECT THEMSELVES JUST LIKE ANYONE ELSE WOULD?.

I agree with Siongo! If you don't actually know the facts you are only making unfounded comments that are fuelling the racist opinions. I travel with many of these African people every day and they're quiet, considerate and courteous. Get the facts before you make judgements and, honestly, all the facts are not portrayed by the media!
