Sharks sink at the graveyard

30 Jun, 2009 10:37 AM
"They don't call it the Graveyard for nothin. Enjoy the bus trip."

These were the words echoed by club stalwart Pud Lee to the departing Port Macquarie players and officials as they trudged out the gate a broken, dejected and dishevelled rabble. Some may call this a bit harsh however for those hardy souls who have witnessed the contempt often shown by this club for our football teams over the past seasons it was a sight for sore eyes.

From the resolve on the lads faces as they returned to the sheds after the warm up it was obvious Bello were up for a big game and once seeing this I immediately did what any professional and unbiased reporter would, I backed us to win a lazy $200.

The final scoreline of 43 to 24 flattered the Sharks side as they really weren't in the hunt for any period of time. Our lads took to the field at 100% and ripped into everything they did with gusto to lead 26 - 6 at halftime. The problem now for coach White would be whether he could keep the boys minds on the job and ensure a comprehensive win or would they switch off as they have in the past and scrape home with a 48 - 44 nailbiter leaving us poor supporters reaching for the KwikEez (not sure of the spelling as I tend to eat the packet also whenever I need one).

We were in luck this week as the boys had also got on for $400 and decided they needed the money and so it was, Bello ran out convincing 43 - 24 winners.

There were many try scorers however Dan "Jack" Russell bagged another double to take his tally to 398 for the season whilst Cameron Blair scored a hat trick and still managed to fold his jumper away ready for next week. For mine the standouts were Blair "Spare" Sankey, Izzy Boutell, Scotchy Millan and Danny Russell. Warren Cutmore was also busy as was Johnny Russell who seemed to play the entire game with a wooden leg.

Izzy Boutell won the players player which as I was reliably informed by Gavin himself, hasn't been won by a winger in 1st grade since 1996 when club legend Gavin Brown was lucky enough to pick up this prestigous award after manger Ray Nolan forgot to take the votes and Gav was forced to tally them himself.

The Reggies tried hard all day however they were just outclassed by a much bigger and more cohesive Port side while in the Under 18s the boys learnt more about themselves in 60 minutes of footy than they have all year as they never gave up against a very ill disciplined and aggressive Port side to go down 44 to 8. Louie "Tripod" Taylor won the Perfect Pizza Players Player People's Pizza Prize proudly presented by a past people's personality player in Peter Peters.

Next Saturday, that's right, Saturday, sees our lads take on the Macksville Sea Eagles at Macksville Park with the Under 18s kicking off at 12pm.

See you there and Up the Maggies.
