Due to the flooding in Urunga in March this year the Surf Club’s Business Houses Boat Race Day was rescheduled for last weekend (Sept 19) on the Kalang River. A good turn out was evident but naturally numbers were down this year due to the timing of the event. We will be back to our usual time next year, that being the first Sunday in May.
Some interesting costumes were evident on the day which enhanced the convivial nature of the event. The girls from the Ocean View Hotel were outstanding with their costumes, coming dressed as beer bottles with twist tops as well attached.
The river bank was speckled with spectators as firstly the Women’s Crews took to the water. A great rowing feat by the girls from the OVH (Linda, Nicole, Kelly and Leanne) blitzed the field with three wins from three races and having the fastest combined times were declared the winners. The men’s crews were next off the mark with a tightly contested series with the Bellingen Golf Club just nudging out the boys from the OVH by four seconds over the three race series. Bellingen Council proved too strong in the over 200 years category with Bob Malone heading up the team although Mayor Mark Troy called on a substitute in the guise of Fred Keizer to row for him and with Baz Smith and Grant Lyttle joining in the Mayor’s celebration.
Special mention to the two Women’s Crews and a Men’s Crew from the Coffs Harbour Hospital Emergency Care Unit for attending the day and competing with much enthusiasm with slipping and sliding, crabbing and crawling being the order of the day.
A wonderful day was had by all and we hope to see many more next year in May. Urunga Surf Club would like to thank all the crews for participating in this annual event.
