The BHS 15 years football team took on Nambucca HS in the third round of the Bill Turner Trophy in Nambucca on Monday 24th May. The winner of this game would go into the area final against the winner of Woolgoolga HS and Maclean HS. The game was certainly a sea-sawing encounter with defense dominating with few shots on goal all game.
Nambucca's intensions were made clear early with big boots down the field hoping the Bello defence would make a mistake and they could finish with a goal. The Bellingen girls stuck to their game plan passing to feet and making the ball do the work. In particular, in the midfield, Lauren Sale and Sam Barker were outstanding with their ball control and passing game. The team definitely looked good and set up a number of scoring opportunities only to be pulled back by the referee's whistle for offside. Half time came and went and the score was still 0-0.
Nambucca continued with their game plan of big kicks and it almost paid off halfway through the second half when a little mistake in defence nearly saw a goal . But the defensive line of Jemara Imrie, Hannah Taylor, Matilda Brewen and Bianca Mason were too good for Nambucca and their one chance was quickly taken away.
At the other end, opportunities started to present themselves with Jessica Marks and Luka Alford going close with a few shots and a numbers of corners causing Nambucca all sorts of problems. Finally, we were given a penalty about 30m out and Sam Barker went to take the shot.
Unfortunately, she couldn't convert despite a good effort. However, she didn't have to wait long to go again as a Nambucca defender tripped Lauren Sale just outside the box. This was a closer shot and Sam made no mistakes slotting it into the back of the net. Finally, 1-0 and only a minute to go. This was a well deserved win and all the team played their positions and played good passing football with some passages of play as good as you'll see anywhere.
The Area Final will be a home game and will probably be played next week at Connell Park. It would be great to have some home town support for these very talented football players.
