A one-dayer at the "village green" to get us underway for the 2010 part of our season. We lost the toss again and bowled first, but with the "Bellingen Doctor" blowing we had the best of the fielding conditions. Bowling was steady and attacking from both Julian and Louis which brought about a run out from Scotty Hulbert for our first wicket, Sawtell 1/20 off 7 overs.
Louis struck in his 6th over taking a handy catch of his own bowling and then Nick came on and one was sliced to Billy Mills at point. Sawtell 3/48 off 18 overs. Nick then found the edge for the skip to get his name in the book and then Scotty Hulbert picked up an lbw to have Sawtell 5/53 off 21 overs. The ship was steadied by the Sawtellians before a drinks break and the introduction of "nude-spin" from the skip, who picked up 2 quick wickets from sharp catches taken by Simon Noble at slip and then Maurice "Akmal" Hulbert behind the stumps. Sawtell 7/95 off 32 overs.
The skip then picked up the skip when Louis took one in the deep and Father Paul chimed in with a catch taken by "Akmal" Hulbert to have them 9/136 off 43 overs. They then added another 14 before a run out off the last ball brought their innings to a close at 150.
With openers Scott and James Brownlee teeing off we got away to a flyer with 20 off the first over and 8 off the second catapoulting us to 0/28 off 2 overs. The show continued with Scott blugeoning everything and James stroking nicely along the ground at the other end to take us at one stage to 0/86 off 11 overs and then 1/111 off 17 when Scott was bowled for a whirlwind 72.
With 40 runs to win we rotated the order and gave newcomer Rob "fast-car-bike-girls" Begonia a debut bat and Billy "Moses" Mills a hit, but this along with Julian, Nick, Louis and the skip failing, we were soon 7/138 off 28 and making a meal of it. All this time James was making it look easy and rode us to victory with a brilliant 57no with Father Paul 2no when we past them in the 31st over 7 down.
A convincing win against the front runners of the comp to have us outright 2nd on the competition ladder leading into a 2-dayer next round against West Coffs at Coffs. This weeks quote comes from George M Trevelyan who said "Village cricket spread fast through the land. In those days, before it became scientific, cricket was the best game in the world to watch - each ball a potential crisis." Ya not wrong George!
