Boxing Tournament to assist Dorrigo Youth Clinic

10 Nov, 2009 08:28 AM
Dorrigo Amateur Boxing Club will conduct their annual boxing tournament on Saturday 14th November.

Benefits from the night will go to the Dorrigo Youth Clinic.

Dorrigo Club has been operating continuosly for 50 years, with records of several other clubs being in existence much prior.

Regular Annual Tournaments have assisted many worthy causes, and can lay claims to being a major support for the erection of the sporting complex at the recreational ground.

Representing the Australian Amateur Boxing Association (AABA) in the Far North Coast Zone, Dorrigo Club is recognized as perhaps the leading Club.

Old hands will recall an annual tournament when 32 bouts were arranged neccesitating an early afternoon session to complete the program.

Efforts are currently underway to recreate the history of Boxing on the Plateau. And it is hoped in the near future that the information will be available in book form.

However more important at the moment is the 2009 tournament.

It is anticipated there will be some 14 or 15 bouts featuring our Dorrigo boys who will be competing against state title holders, earned recently in Sydney.

There will also be several exhibition bouts with a host of young local aspiring boxers, all new, all learning and keen to compete.

Rough, tough Bellingen 1st grade footballer” DION MARR” has put his hand up to take on any challenger, open to all, with keen interest from a certain directon ,this one alone could be worth the entry fee.

The local Lions Club will again cater for any food requirements and with great service from the Dorrigo Bowling Club staff no one will go hungry or thirsty.

Sponsorship from local Businesses has once again exceeded all expectations and for this gesture the promoters are most thankful.

Dr Ruth Lenehan will again officiate as Doctor, a job with large responsibility, and one she has handled previously in fine style.

Celebrity guests for the evening include Mr John Lewis current leading trainer, in the world.

John will address the audience with a short motivational speech.

Ex- Australian Featherweight & Lightweight champion from the 50’s, George Flemming will be attending and is looking to meet again with old friends.

George was one of the most active boxers in the 50’s winning 46 KO’s 23 lost, 18 drew 16 for a total of 81 fights. George was recognized for his commitment to training.

Another well known identity in boxing, and a regular at Dorrigo tournaments is Mr Athol McQueen, a former Olympic representative and current officiating referee.

A further feature is the raffle which will be drawn on the evening.

The opportunity to win a full dressed lamb is exciting with 2nd & 3rd a half dressed lamb, 4th a bag of Dorrigo Potatoes & 5th a bottle of Overproof Rum. There will be tickets available on the evening.

A big night is expected with tickets available at the door. It is however recommended to be in early to ensure a seat. Remember proceeds of the evening are to the Dorrigo Youth Clinic.
