Shots fired during stand off

30 Jun, 2009 09:34 AM
A 21-year-old Bellingen man appeared in Court on Monday following a three-hour stand-off with police on Sunday. Police were called to the Bellingen golf course at around 10.30am following reports of a man carrying a firearm. Police established a perimeter at the golf course before police negotiators arrived and began communicating with the man. A number of streets were closed with several surrounding houses and businesses evacuated during the operation. Police allege the man fired several shots during the stand-off before he surrendered to officers from the State Protection Support Unit about 1:30pm. No one was injured during the incident. He was taken to Coffs Harbour police station where he was charged with firing a firearm in a public place, possess a loaded firearm in a public place, possess an unauthorised pistol and use an unauthorised pistol. Peter John Chapman of Hammond St appeared in Coffs Harbour Local Court on Monday. He will undergo psychiatric assessment and treatment before appearing on Bellingen Local Court on August 6. Golfer and club barman, Russell Williams was on the course at the time and spoke to the young man, who was carrying a back pack. “A short time later, I heard a gunshot.” Secretary Manager of the Golf Club, Gillian Anderson said the club would be monitoring staff and giving them any support they might need. Police Inspector Darren Spooner told the Courier-Sun the man had had a dispute with his girl friend the previous night. “Negotiators were in mobile phone contact with him.” Nobody was injured during the operation. Police diverted Waterfall Way traffic along North Bank road because Crown Street in Bellingen remains closed after the March 31 flood. Meanwhile, man died after his car crashed into the Kalang River on Friday. About 7.20pm a Ford Fairmont was travelling south on the Pacific Highway at Urunga when the vehicle allegedly crossed the roadway before launching off the banks of the Kalang River, striking a tree and submerging upside down in the river near the Newry Island bridge. The passenger, a 36-year-old Queensland woman, managed to climb from the vehicle and call for help. Police and emergency services personnel arrived a short time later and worked to free the driver, a 40-year-old Queensland man. He was trapped for over an hour before being freed by local State Emergency Service volunteers. The man was declared deceased a short time later and a post mortem examination will be carried out to determine the cause of his death. The woman was taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital as a precaution but was not injured. Officers from Coffs/Clarence Local Area Command are continuing investigations into the cause of the crash. A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
