 Fourth flood in nine months

Fourth flood in nine months

27 Oct, 2009 10:05 AM
Heavy rain in the Never Never and Kalang catchments caused minor flooding in parts on the shire yesterday. Spicketts Creek on the Kalang recorded 399mm in the 24 hours to 9am yesterday while Crystal Creek near Gleniffer recorded 409mm in the same period. Urunga recorded 316mm from 6am Monday to 6am Tuesday. Thora received 200mm over two days. Gleniffer had 353mm in the same period. Bellingen recorded 250mm in the 24 hours to 7am and 40 in the previous 24 hours. Lavender’s Bridge closed at around midnight and peaked at 5.88m at 2.30 yesterday morning. Water was still across the bridge at 7am when the water level had dropped to 5m. Waterfall Way was officially cut at Cameron’s Corner, but motorists were driving through the water. The waterfalls on Dorrigo Mountain were across the road, but again, vehicles were getting through. Most schools were open with skeleton staffing levels, but the High School was closed except for Higher School Certificate examinations. Some students were unable to get into the exam centre at the High School while others were brought across the river in the SES flood boat.
